Shipping Container Delivery Explained: Access, Tilt-Bed & What to Expect

Shipping container delivery is more straightforward than most buyers expect, but a little site prep goes a long way. Most containers arrive by tilt-bed truck, which sets the unit on the ground without a crane for typical placements. Knowing how it works helps you pick the right spot and avoid surprises on delivery day.

How Tilt-Bed Delivery Works

A tilt-bed truck backs toward your placement spot, then angles its bed upward and slides the container off the rear while pulling forward. The container eases down to the ground in line with the truck. Because the truck drives forward as the box comes off, it needs a clear, straight run of space behind it, not just the footprint of the container itself.

Access and Clearance You Need

The single most important factor is clear, straight access. For a 40-foot container, plan on roughly 60 feet of straight clearance so the truck can position and pull forward as it unloads, plus room overhead for the bed to tilt. Smaller containers need proportionally less, but the principle is the same. Avoid low branches, power lines, soft ground, tight turns, and steep slopes. The surface should be firm and reasonably level so the container sits true and the doors operate correctly.

Preparing the Site

Mark the exact spot you want the container and make sure the path in is wide and unobstructed. A compacted gravel pad, concrete, or firm level dirt all work well. If the ground is soft or uneven, placing railroad ties or timbers under the corners can keep the unit level and off the mud. Clear gates, parked vehicles, and debris in advance so the driver has a straight shot.

If Access Is Tight

When a tilt-bed cannot reach the final spot because of obstacles or limited clearance, alternatives like crane placement exist, but they add cost and coordination. The simplest path is almost always to choose a placement the tilt-bed can reach directly, so it is worth measuring your access before you order.

Delivery Timeframe

From a confirmed order, expect delivery in 3 to 7 business days nationwide via depot delivery. Having your site ready and your access measured ensures the drop-off goes quickly once the truck arrives.
